HONOR GUARD

The Harrison County Honor Guard provides military honors for deceased veterans and service members.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 573 and American Legion has participated in this tradition since its founding in 1899. Honor Guard rituals include:

  • Presenting a folded flag: A member of the Honor Guard presents a folded U.S. burial flag to the family of the deceased
  • Three volleys: A rifle line fires three volleys to honor duty, country, and honor
  • Taps: A bugler plays Taps

The Honor Guard on top of performing funeral services for veterans, interact with the community on military holidays and other events, and demonstrate the proper way to dispose of a U.S. flag.

According to VFW’s Congressional Charter, the organization has a duty to "perpetuate the memory and history of our dead.” And to ensure that no Veteran, who has honorably served in the United States Armed Forces goes without their much-deserved final Honors. So to honor this time driven tradition,  Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 573 houses the Harrison County Honor Guard as a community service.

All veterans are welcome to join the Harrison County Honor Guard, we are always looking for new volunteers.
